Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Are you worried that your child may not be reaching developmental milestones?

At Physio Inq, our paediatric occupational therapists help children and adolescents build the skills and confidence they need to participate fully in everyday life - at home, at school, and in the community. We bring expert care to your child’s natural environment, ensuring therapy is practical, fun, and effective.

We come to you with flexible in-home, clinic and telehealth occupational therapy for kids across Australia; including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Whether your child needs support with fine motor skills, sensory regulation, self-care, or emotional development, we focus on practical, achievable goals that help your family thrive.

Paediatric Occupational Therapists work with children of all ages and their families to help children of all ages perform daily activities that they may find challenging by addressing sensory, social, behavioural, motor, and environmental issues.

Our OT’s utilise the latest research and technologies in their field to assess and design rehabilitation programs that are evidenced based, efficient and effective ensuring your child is always receiving first class services.

Paediatric OT's have specialist skills and experience in helping children through crucial periods of development with activities such as:

  • Self care: dressing, bathing, using the toilet, eating, doing chores, making a snack and organising themselves.
  •  Play and leisure: playing alone or with others, imaginary play and participating in leisure/sport activities.
  • School: tasks involved with participating in a learning environment such as concentrating, following instructions and handwriting and typing skills.

How Paediatric Occupational Therapy Helps

Our experienced OTs work with children and families to:

  • Improve fine and gross motor coordination for everyday activities.
  • Build independence in self-care (e.g., dressing, eating, toileting).
  • Support sensory processing, attention and emotional regulation.
  • Enhance handwriting, play and social interaction skills.
  • Create supportive home and school environments for participation.

Each program is individualised, ensuring every child feels empowered to feel stronger, move better, think clearer.

Physio Inq OT’s will set goals with your family and child, and support your child to achieve these goals by:

  • Helping your child to build their skills through targeted and fun activities.
  • Providing you with specialist advice and support to adjust your child's activity or environment, in order to help your child to participate better. This could involve supporting your child with specialist equipment.
  • Providing guidance to you and to other important people in your child's life, such as teachers, so that you know how to support your child to reach their potential every day.

We will assist you and your family in any way that can improve daily function and activities. After an initial assessment, your Physio Inq OT will coordinate with you, other relevant professionals, carers, and family members to assist in developing a treatment plan and strategy that is best suited.

What to Expect From Our OT Assessment & Sessions

Comprehensive Assessment – We begin with a detailed occupational therapist assessment, exploring your child’s strengths, challenges and daily routines.

Goal Planning – Together, we identify meaningful goals aligned with your child’s developmental stage and your family’s priorities.

Therapy Sessions – Practical, play-based activities designed to build confidence and skill progression.

Ongoing Review – Regular progress updates and adjustments ensure outcomes stay on track.

All reports are clear, timely and NDIS-ready, making coordination with support coordinators, plan managers and referrers simple.

Development Areas Included in Our Sessions

Unlike a clinic-based approach, our mobile OT sessions use your child's real-life settings to build functional skills. Every session is play-based and tailored to your child’s unique interests.

  • Fine Motor and Handwriting Skill Development: Targeted activities to improve pencil grip, scissor use, manipulation skills, and speed/legibility for school tasks.
  • Sensory Processing and Regulation: Strategies to help children manage responses to sensory input (like noise or touch) and improve focus, calm, and emotional regulation.
  • Self-Care and Independence: Building proficiency in crucial daily living skills, such as dressing, feeding, toileting, and establishing consistent hygiene routines.
  • Gross Motor Coordination and Play: Improving balance, climbing, jumping, and ball skills, integrating physical movement into fun, developmental play scenarios.

Social Skills and School Readiness: Utilising role-play and structured activities to enhance turn-taking, peer interaction, emotional literacy, and classroom participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We strongly encourage sessions in schools, preschools, and childcare centers. This allows our OTs to observe your child in their social and learning environments, providing teachers with practical strategies to support your child’s participation throughout the school day.

We aim to respond to all enquiries on the same day. In most regions, we can typically schedule an initial assessment within 48 hours to a week, depending on therapist availability in your specific area.

While they often overlap, the focus differs: Physiotherapy targets gross motor movement and physical strength; Speech Pathology focuses on communication and swallowing; Occupational Therapy looks at the "whole picture"; integrating motor, sensory, and cognitive skills to help your child perform "occupations" like playing, dressing, and writing.

Absolutely. We provide comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) and progress reports. These documents are essential for NDIS plan reviews or applications for school-based funding (such as Integration Aide support), providing the clinical evidence needed to secure resources for your child.
