Maitland

The local government area covers 396km² from Woodberry in the east to Lochinvar in the west, Tocal to the north, and Gillieston Heights to the south. Our nearly 70,000 residents are settled in town centres, new and growing suburbs and quiet rural areas. Our residents come from a broad cross section of society and by 2023, it is expected about 90,000 people will call our city home.

Nestled within the beautiful Blue Gum Regional Park, and only 1 hour 45 minutes from Sydney, Treetops Adventure Newcastle has unique tree ropes courses that pack a lot of adventure into a small area. With 90+ aerial challenges and 20 different ziplines, you can clamber along the native gum trees at your own pace.
A former maximum security prison which housed some of Australia’s most notorious criminals including the infamous escape artist, Darcy Dugan, the Anita Cobby killers and serial backpacker murderer, Ivan Milat, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. The gates have been unlocked for you to discover the history and stories of incarceration. Visitors are invited to ‘serve time’ learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes.
The museum hosts a range of permanent exhibitions that tell the story of Morpeth including the railway, housing, working industries and families. These are supported by a suite of ever changing exhibitions that can focus on different themes of Morpeth and as new and interesting historical elements are discovered or restored.
