What Is Community-Based Allied Health?

Community-based allied health refers to therapy and health services delivered in community settings; environments outside the home and outside a clinic. This includes schools, early childhood centres, gyms, supported accommodation facilities, workplaces, community centres, day programs, parks and other public spaces.

At Physio Inq, community-based delivery is one of three service channels available alongside in-home and telehealth. It is particularly valuable when the goals of therapy are best achieved in the specific environment where they need to be applied. A child working on school participation goals benefits from therapy in the classroom. An adult with disability building community access skills benefits from sessions in the actual community setting they want to navigate. An older person working on fitness and social engagement benefits from sessions in a local gym or community centre.

Community-based allied health is also a key delivery model for NDIS participants whose plans include goals related to social and community participation. Allied health professionals; physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and exercise physiologists, play a direct role in building the physical function, communication skills and daily living capacity that enable meaningful community participation.

Physio Inq’s community-based services are delivered by the same AHPRA-registered and ESSA-accredited clinicians who provide our in-home and telehealth services. There is no difference in clinical quality, only in the environment where care is delivered.

Community-Based Allied Health and the NDIS

Community-based allied health delivery is strongly aligned with the NDIS framework. Many NDIS plans include goals specifically related to social and community participation, and allied health plays a critical role in building the capacity participants need to achieve those goals.

Allied health delivered in community settings can be funded across several NDIS support categories:

In addition to NDIS, community-based services are also available to clients accessing:

  • Support at Home program (formerly Home Care Package)
  • Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
  • Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans
  • Private health insurance
  • Private / self-funded arrangements

Who We Support Through Community-Based Allied Health

Image 1

NDIS Participants with Community Participation Goals

For NDIS participants with goals related to community access, social participation, school or workplace engagement, our allied health professionals deliver therapy directly in the relevant community environment. This approach supports meaningful, practical progress that is immediately applicable to the goals in the participant’s plan.

Children in School and Early Childhood Settings

Our paediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists work with children in schools, childcare centres and early learning environments. Delivering therapy in these settings allows goals to be practised in the exact context where they matter: the classroom, the playground and daily school routines.

Adults with Disability in Supported Accommodation

For adults living in SIL (Supported Independent Living) or SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation), community-based allied health can be delivered within the residential environment or in the broader community settings the person accesses regularly.

Adults Returning to Work or Building Community Independence

We support adults with disability, injury or chronic health conditions who are working towards employment, community participation or greater independence in daily life. Therapy in workplace and community settings bridges the gap between home-based rehabilitation and real-world function.

Older Australians Accessing Community Programs

For older Australians who participate in community programs, day centres or fitness facilities, our exercise physiologists and physiotherapists can deliver services in those environments, supporting continuity of social connection alongside physical health goals.
