Paediatric Speech Pathology in Newcastle Physio Inq

Newcastle Paediatric Speech Pathology

Paediatric speech pathology is an area of speech pathology focused on supporting children and young people, from infants through to adolescents, to develop and strengthen the communication skills they need for everyday life. Speech pathologists work with children to assess and treat difficulties with speech sounds, language, literacy, stuttering, voice, social communication and swallowing.

At Physio Inq, our paediatric speech pathologists work with children in the environments where communication happens most naturally; at home, in school, in childcare settings and in the community. Delivering therapy in real-world environments makes it more engaging for children and directly applicable to the situations they encounter every day.

Our paediatric speech pathologists have experience supporting children across a wide range of communication needs and work closely with families, teachers, early childhood educators and other allied health professionals to ensure therapy is consistent and coordinated.

What our paediatric speech pathologists can help with:

  • Late talking and early language development
  • Speech sound disorders and unclear speech
  • Receptive and expressive language delays
  • Stuttering and fluency difficulties
  • Literacy and phonological awareness skills
  • Social communication and pragmatic language
  • AAC assessment and support for children with complex communication needs
  • Feeding and swallowing difficulties in infants and children
  • Communication support for autism spectrum disorder
  • Language and communication support for NDIS participants

All programs are developed in partnership with the child’s family and, where relevant, their school, early childhood service and allied health team.

How We Deliver Paediatric Speech Pathology

Physio Inq delivers paediatric speech pathology across three service channels, ensuring children and families can access support in the most effective and convenient way.

In Your Home

Home-based paediatric speech pathology allows therapy to take place in the environment where children spend most of their time. This is particularly effective for early intervention with young children, feeding and swallowing support, and language goals that can be built into daily family routines.

Parent involvement is a central part of home-based sessions. Our speech pathologists provide clear strategies, activities and coaching that families can use between visits to support progress.

In School or Childcare

Physio Inq can deliver speech pathology in school and childcare settings, allowing therapy to be applied directly in the learning and social environment where communication goals matter most. This is particularly beneficial for children with literacy difficulties, social communication goals or language needs that affect classroom participation.

Our speech pathologists work collaboratively with teachers and early childhood educators to ensure therapy strategies are understood and reinforced throughout the day.

Online (Telehealth)

Telehealth paediatric speech pathology is available for older children and for parent coaching sessions. It is a useful option for families in regional or remote areas, or for regular check-in sessions between in-person visits.

Our speech pathologists have extensive experience supporting children with ASD, including social communication development, AAC assessment and training, and building functional communication skills for everyday life.

Children with NDIS Funding

We are a registered NDIS provider and support children whose speech pathology is funded through their NDIS plan. Our paediatric speech pathologists provide goal-based therapy aligned to the child’s plan and supply timely reports to support plan reviews.

Children with Literacy Difficulties

For children experiencing difficulties with reading, spelling or phonological awareness, our speech pathologists provide evidence-based assessment and structured literacy programs that support school participation and learning.

Children with Stuttering

We provide evidence-based stuttering intervention for children and young people, using approaches suited to the child’s age, severity and family context. Parent involvement is a key part of effective stuttering treatment, and our therapists provide clear guidance for families.

  • Stuttering or fluency difficulties: Supporting children to feel more comfortable speaking in groups, answering questions or doing presentations
  • Language delays and comprehension difficulties: Assisting with understanding, following instructions and using complete sentences in everyday conversations and classroom tasks
  • Literacy and learning support: Improving reading accuracy, spelling and written expression to support classroom learning and homework routines
  • Social communication challenges: Supporting conversation, turn-taking and making friends so it’s easier to start conversations and maintain friendships
  • Swallowing or feeding difficulties: Helping children eat and drink safely and comfortably to make mealtimes calmer and more manageable
  • Voice differences or vocal strain: Guiding healthy voice use for children who talk or sing frequently so they can use their voice more comfortably
  • Communication support for developmental or neurological conditions: Offering help for developmental delay, autism and more to support everyday communication and participation

Each therapy plan aligns with your child’s NDIS goals and includes clear progress updates for families, teachers and support coordinators.

Development areas supported in children’s speech pathology sessions

Each speech therapy session is designed to support skills your child uses every day at home, in the classroom and when connecting with others.

Programs are shaped around your child’s needs and your family’s routines and may include support in the following areas:

Speech clarity and sound development

Therapy targets pronunciation, sound production and word formation to help children speak more clearly and be better understood during conversations, storytelling and classroom activities.

Language Skills

Sessions support understanding language, following instructions and expressing ideas using words and sentences so it’s easier to answer questions, follow along in class and join in at home.

Social Interaction

Children develop conversation skills, peer interaction and confidence engaging with others in social and school settings, including playdates, group work and friendships.

Literacy and learning foundations

Speech pathology can strengthen reading and writing skills that support academic progress and build the foundation for reading confidence and school participation.

Feeding and swallowing safety

Therapists support children who experience chewing or swallowing difficulties to eat and drink more safely, making mealtimes safer, more comfortable and less stressful for families.

Confidence and functional communication

Speech Therapy with Physio Inq aims to help children advocate for themselves, ask for help and participate more independently in daily routines when possible.

There is no difference. The term speech pathology is more commonly used in Australia than speech therapy, however they are both the same profession. All speech pathologists/therapists are required to complete a university qualification and be registered with Speech Pathology Australia.

Early Intervention is the term used to describe the services and supports that are available to babies and young children with developmental delays and disabilities and their families. Speech Pathology has been shown to be very effective as part of an early intervention program.

Yes - Speech Pathology does work for toddlers.

Speech pathologists are university trained professionals who can help toddlers with:

  • Speech and sound generation
  • language development
  • Reading and writing
  • Social skills
  • Stuttering

Speech Pathologists assist toddlers find the best way to communicate to meet their needs. This might include strategies to improve speech clarity or fluency, or signs, symbols, gestures, and other forms of assisted communication.

Speech Pathologists can work in kindergartens and schools, hospitals, early intervention programs, community health centres, mental health services and private practice.

Your child may benefit from Speech Therapy if they are struggling with communication including:

  • Not formulating words or communicating at age appropriate levels
  • Problems with others understanding what they are saying
  • Difficulty understanding what other people say.
  • Frustration with difficulty with communication
  • Difficulty projecting their voice
  • Stuttering, or
  • A speech impediment/list

Yes - Speech pathology can have great results with adults. When we think of lisps and speech impediments, we often only think of children. Yet, there are many reasons why adults could benefit from speech therapy.

An adult who would benefit from speech pathology might have the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty speaking clearly
  • Issues with swallowing
  • Difficulty stringing words and phrases together
  • Difficulty reading and writing
  • Dry mouth
  • Stuttering and lisps
  • Chronic sore throat or pain in the vocal cords

Yes - A speech pathologist is trained to assess and treat stuttering. If a child stutters for some years, it can be harmful, even if natural recovery occurs without therapy.

For this reason, it is recommended that all pre-school children who start to stutter receive therapy.

For older children, adolescents and adults, a speech pathologist can recommend treatment to reduce the impact of stuttering on daily life.

Speech therapy assists with challenges of language and communication often experienced by people with autism spectrum disorder. It can help people with autism improve their verbal, nonverbal, and social communication.

A speech pathologist may look to improve spoken language, assist in development or improvement of nonverbal skills such as gestures or signs, or work with someone to learn to communicate using an alternative method (such as pictures or technology).

Under the NDIS scheme we have access to interpreters who can be arranged free of charge to come to the initial assessment to assist with the appointment.

Simply let us know if you need this and we will arrange this for you.

Otherwise, we are able to organise sessions when family members might be present to assist with communication, or match the client with a therapist who speaks the same language if that is available.
