LenaghanDiabetes Exercise Physiology | Physio Inq Diabetes Exercise Physiology

Lenaghan Diabetes Exercise Physiology Industry Leaders

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools available for managing diabetes. Regular, structured physical activity improves insulin sensitivity, supports blood glucose regulation, aids weight management, reduces cardiovascular risk and improves overall quality of life for people living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Exercise physiology for diabetes is delivered by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) university-trained allied health professionals with clinical training in exercise prescription for chronic disease. Unlike general fitness programs, exercise physiology for diabetes is individually designed, clinically supervised and adapted to each person’s medical history, current health status, medications and diabetes management goals.

At Physio Inq, our exercise physiologists work closely with GPs, endocrinologists, diabetes educators and dieticians to ensure exercise programs are safely integrated into each person’s overall diabetes management plan. Sessions are delivered at home, in the community or via telehealth, making high-quality diabetes exercise support accessible regardless of location or mobility.

What our diabetes exercise physiologists can help with:

  • Structured aerobic exercise programs to improve blood glucose regulation
  • Resistance training to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic health
  • Safe exercise prescription considering blood glucose monitoring and medication
  • Weight management and body composition improvement programs
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction through exercise
  • Education on exercise safety for people living with diabetes, including hypoglycaemia awareness
  • Exercise programs for people with diabetic complications, including neuropathy and retinopathy
  • Graded exercise programs for people with diabetes and comorbidities
  • Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan referrals from GPs
  • Long-term exercise habit development and behaviour change support

All programs are individually designed, regularly reviewed and adjusted based on blood glucose monitoring data, health changes and progress towards personal goals.

How We Deliver Diabetes Exercise Physiology

Physio Inq delivers diabetes exercise physiology across three service channels, ensuring people living with diabetes can access safe, supervised exercise support regardless of location or circumstances.

In Your Home

Home-based diabetes exercise physiology is particularly effective for people who are new to exercise, managing diabetes complications such as neuropathy or retinopathy, or who find travelling to a facility difficult. Our exercise physiologists design programs using available home space and equipment, and provide clear guidance on blood glucose monitoring before, during and after exercise to ensure sessions are safe and effective.

In Your Community

For clients who enjoy exercising in a community setting, our exercise physiologists can deliver sessions in local parks, gyms or community centres. Community-based exercise can support motivation, social connection and long-term exercise adherence.

Online (Telehealth)

Telehealth diabetes exercise physiology is available for program delivery, education and coaching sessions. It is particularly effective for clients who are managing their diabetes well and primarily need guidance, monitoring and accountability to maintain their exercise program consistently.

Who We Support

Physio Inq’s diabetes exercise physiology services are available to people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes across a range of ages, health statuses and support arrangements.

People with Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions in Australia, and regular structured exercise is a cornerstone of its management. Our exercise physiologists design programs that address the key metabolic goals of type 2 diabetes management, improving insulin sensitivity, supporting weight management, reducing cardiovascular risk and building long-term physical fitness.

People with Type 1 Diabetes

Exercise for people with type 1 diabetes requires knowledge of blood glucose management, insulin interactions and the physiological responses that differ between aerobic and resistance exercise. Our exercise physiologists have experience working safely with people living with type 1 diabetes and provide clear education on managing blood glucose before, during and after exercise.

People with Pre-Diabetes or Metabolic Syndrome

For people identified as at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, structured exercise is one of the most effective interventions for delaying or preventing progression. Our programs focus on sustainable lifestyle change, weight management and improved metabolic health.

People with Diabetes and Comorbidities

Many people living with diabetes also manage cardiovascular disease, obesity, chronic kidney disease, neuropathy or other comorbidities. Our exercise physiologists design programs that safely account for these additional health considerations and work in coordination with the broader treating team.

GP and Specialist-Referred Clients

We accept referrals through Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, as well as direct referrals from GPs, endocrinologists and diabetes educators. Our team provides progress reports back to the referring clinician and coordinates closely throughout the program.

Exercise physiology for type 1 and type 2 diabetes

While exercise benefits both forms of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes require different clinical considerations.

Type 1 diabetes exercise support

For people living with type 1 diabetes, exercise physiology focuses on:

  • Safe exercise planning around insulin use
  • Monitoring and reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia
  • Building strength and endurance without destabilising blood glucose levels
  • Education around exercise timing, intensity, and recovery

Type 2 diabetes exercise support

For people living with type 2 diabetes, exercise physiology often targets:

  • Improving insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake
  • Increasing physical activity levels in a safe and structured way
  • Supporting weight management and cardiovascular health
  • Reducing sedentary behaviour and building sustainable routines

Our exercise physiologists tailor every program to your diagnosis, medications, fitness level, and lifestyle.

What does a diabetes exercise physiologist do?

A diabetes exercise physiologist is a university-trained allied health professional who specialises in prescribing exercise for people with chronic and complex health conditions.

At Physio Inq, your exercise physiologist will:

  1. Complete a comprehensive assessment of your health, mobility, and goals
