Aged Care Speech Pathology in Blue Mountains Physio Inq

Blue Mountains Aged Care Speech Pathology

Aged care speech pathology is speech pathology tailored to the communication and swallowing needs of older Australians. As people age, changes in muscle strength, cognition and neurological function can affect the ability to speak clearly, understand others, and eat and drink safely. Speech pathology plays an important role in identifying these changes early and providing practical, evidence-based support to maintain quality of life and dignity.

At Physio Inq, our aged care speech pathologists deliver assessment and therapy at home and in residential aged care settings. Conducting assessments in the actual mealtime environment, observing the foods, textures, utensils and routines a person uses each day, produces more accurate findings and more relevant recommendations than a clinical assessment alone.

We work with older Australians accessing a range of funding pathways, including the Support at Home program (formerly Home Care Package), the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and private funding.

What our aged care speech pathologists can help with:

  • Swallowing assessment and dysphagia management
  • Mealtime management planning and food texture recommendations
  • Thickened fluid assessment and prescription
  • Communication support for people living with dementia
  • Aphasia and acquired communication disorders in older adults
  • Voice changes and vocal strength programs
  • Cognitive communication support, including memory and word-finding
  • Carer and family mealtime training
  • Coordination with Home Care Package providers and aged care facility staff
  • End-of-life communication and mealtime planning

Every assessment and program is developed with the older person’s goals, preferences and dignity at the centre of care.

How We Deliver Aged Care Speech Pathology

Physio Inq delivers aged care speech pathology across three service channels, ensuring older Australians can access support in the most appropriate and dignified way.

In Your Home

Home-based aged care speech pathology is the most effective model for swallowing assessment and mealtime management. Assessing a person in their actual mealtime environment, with their usual foods, utensils and routines, allows our speech pathologists to make recommendations that are immediately practical and relevant to daily life. Home-based delivery also removes the physical demands of travelling to a clinic, which is particularly important for older Australians with reduced mobility or fatigue.

In Residential Aged Care

Our speech pathologists provide assessment and therapy within residential aged care facilities, working with facility staff, nursing teams, dietitians and care managers to ensure a coordinated approach to mealtime management and communication support. We conduct mealtime observations in the dining environment and provide written mealtime management plans for staff and family members.

Online (Telehealth)

Telehealth speech pathology is available for communication consultations, carer education and follow-up sessions. It is a useful complement to in-person visits and is particularly helpful for clients in regional and remote areas.

Who We Support

Physio Inq’s aged care speech pathology services support older Australians across a range of living situations, conditions and care arrangements.

Older Australians with Swallowing Difficulties

Dysphagia is common in older adults, particularly those with a history of stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia or other neurological conditions. Our speech pathologists conduct comprehensive swallowing assessments and develop practical mealtime management plans to support safe eating and drinking and reduce the risk of aspiration.

People Living with Dementia

Communication and swallowing difficulties are common at all stages of dementia. Our speech pathologists provide communication support strategies for families and carers, mealtime guidance as swallowing changes, and environmental modifications to support meaningful interaction and safe nutrition.

Clients Accessing the Support at Home Program

We work with older Australians accessing speech pathology through the Support at Home program. Our team coordinates directly with providers and case managers to ensure services are delivered in line with the client’s care plan and funding.

Residents in Aged Care Facilities

We provide speech pathology services within residential aged care facilities, conducting mealtime observations, providing mealtime management plans for staff, and supporting communication between residents, families and care teams.

Family Members and Carers

Families and carers play a vital role in supporting safe mealtimes and meaningful communication for older Australians. Our speech pathologists provide thorough training, written mealtime guidelines and practical communication strategies, and are available to answer questions throughout the process.

If you are supporting a family member and would like to discuss their needs before making a referral, we welcome that conversation. Contact our team on 1300 731 733 or use our online Make a Referral Form.

Yes. We were one of the first NDIS Allied Health providers in Australia, being involved with the first rollout in NSW. We know NDIS very well and our therapists are highly trained in the scheme.

Yes, we do see clients under My Aged Care who have their packages managed by a Provider. If you would like to see us, we will organise an agreement with your Home Care Package manager to provide services under your package funding.

There is no difference. The term speech pathology is more commonly used in Australia than speech therapy, however they are both the same profession. All speech pathologists/therapists are required to complete a university qualification and be registered with Speech Pathology Australia.

Early Intervention is the term used to describe the services and supports that are available to babies and young children with developmental delays and disabilities and their families. Speech Pathology has been shown to be very effective as part of an early intervention program.

Yes - Speech Pathology does work for toddlers.

Speech pathologists are university trained professionals who can help toddlers with:

  • Speech and sound generation
  • language development
  • Reading and writing
  • Social skills
  • Stuttering

Speech Pathologists assist toddlers find the best way to communicate to meet their needs. This might include strategies to improve speech clarity or fluency, or signs, symbols, gestures, and other forms of assisted communication.

Speech Pathologists can work in kindergartens and schools, hospitals, early intervention programs, community health centres, mental health services and private practice.

Your child may benefit from Speech Therapy if they are struggling with communication including:

  • Not formulating words or communicating at age appropriate levels
  • Problems with others understanding what they are saying
  • Difficulty understanding what other people say.
  • Frustration with difficulty with communication
  • Difficulty projecting their voice
  • Stuttering, or
  • A speech impediment/list

Yes - Speech pathology can have great results with adults. When we think of lisps and speech impediments, we often only think of children. Yet, there are many reasons why adults could benefit from speech therapy.

An adult who would benefit from speech pathology might have the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty speaking clearly
  • Issues with swallowing
  • Difficulty stringing words and phrases together
  • Difficulty reading and writing
  • Dry mouth
  • Stuttering and lisps
  • Chronic sore throat or pain in the vocal cords

Yes - A speech pathologist is trained to assess and treat stuttering. If a child stutters for some years, it can be harmful, even if natural recovery occurs without therapy.

For this reason, it is recommended that all pre-school children who start to stutter receive therapy.

For older children, adolescents and adults, a speech pathologist can recommend treatment to reduce the impact of stuttering on daily life.

Speech therapy assists with challenges of language and communication often experienced by people with autism spectrum disorder. It can help people with autism improve their verbal, nonverbal, and social communication.

A speech pathologist may look to improve spoken language, assist in development or improvement of nonverbal skills such as gestures or signs, or work with someone to learn to communicate using an alternative method (such as pictures or technology).

Under the NDIS scheme we have access to interpreters who can be arranged free of charge to come to the initial assessment to assist with the appointment.

Simply let us know if you need this and we will arrange this for you.

Otherwise, we are able to organise sessions when family members might be present to assist with communication, or match the client with a therapist who speaks the same language if that is available.
